Techno Warrior Monk

Traditionally in the west, monks are the "wise men" who swear off the pursuit of worldly pleasures and also forgo the distractions of reproduction.

But here we seek the way of the Fertile Monk. The man who successfully commits himself to the responsibilities of family life is another sort of monk, one who devotes himself to serving the next generation, a task surpassed by none other in importance, as essential as is growing the crops we will later harvest.

To succeed, the Fertile Monk needs a code of ethics for himself and a lifestyle that will produce healthy children who are prepared to deal with the problems that will face their generation.

A childhood wholly spent with eyes on a screen is unhealthy, but shielding from harm is no excuse for shielding from experience. It is through the knowledge gained from small harms that we are inoculated against larger, even fatal mistakes. True, the screen dirties the mind with ideas conceived to profit others. But too clean, life becomes sterile, also in the sense of that which is infertile. The art of living is not found in a practice of avoiding the water, but rather in learning to swim without being swept away by the current.
